On Friday 27th May a team from Teamspirit entered Shawbrook/Saracens Foundation/Empower Her charity netball & touch rugby tournament.
The Empower Her project is the latest programme from Saracens Foundation. It is a 12-month project providing 30 young women with the opportunity to gain qualifications and experience to support them in developing leadership roles through sport. The scheme matches amateur sportswomen with elite players from both Saracens Women’s Rugby and Mavericks Netball teams.
The tournament started with a nice surprise; we weren’t just playing netball, but touch rugby as well. We we’re not mentally prepared for this but we’d come this far and couldn’t say no.
For all our grumbling, we were not so bad at rugby. A special mention to Will & Rebecca who ran fast in straight lines and curved lines respectively. However, we really excelled on the netball court winning all our games apart from the first, losing to a very strong team from PWC. Despite an awful injury for our teammate Jess in the second game, we started to find some rhythm and notched up some big wins and finished the tournament with our heads held high beating the eventual tournament winners 2-0.
We can all agree that it was a great day however the greatest part was the collective pain we were all still in on Monday.
